Lifting Safely: What Works and What Doesn't

    One activity often associated with the development of back pain is
    lifting.  So, is there a safe way to lift?

    The following suggestions are provided to reduce lifting injuries;
  • think before you lift - make sure the object to be lifted is within
    your ability. If not, get help. Also, make sure the route you will
    be taking is clear. Look for obstacles on the floor as well as
    overhead.
  • spread your feet apart - widening the base of support provides
    better stability for your back.
  • tighten your abdomen - pull your navel inward towards your spine.
    This helps to activate the "core" muscles that protect your spine.
  • keep the load close to your body - this is perhaps the most important
    step. The further away the load, the greater the risk of injury.
